New Times letter

Here's my letter to little Jimbo Magahern:

Thank you Mr. Magahern for writing that article about Jarrett Maupin and referencing my school, Brophy College Prep. I am glad that you exposed the rampant racism at Brophy, although you left a few things out. You could have mentioned the following to further your claims:
Brophy's graduation requirement of fifty (50) hours of community service done either through Brophy with their Loyola Project, tutoring inner-city kids a couple hours a day, three times a week, a summer immersion trip to either Nogales, Juarez, or Oaxaca, Mexico for two weeks, or complete the fifty hours on their own.

Unofficially Brophy exercises a preferential option for minorities in admission decisions. This has been told to me by more than one faculty member.

Brophy is racist because they kicked an African-American student out of their school who failed three classes and was caught cheating.

Brophy is racist because it would not play Thaddeus Whyte due to his malaise on the court, or Rodney Brown, the smallest member of the team, both juniors on a senior-dominated team.

There are more things, but you get the picture. Now, I'd also like to share a couple of examples of how Jarrett fought tirelessly against racism at Brophy and in his community.

He pointed out in AP Music Theory that the piano was racist since the white keys were more numerous and larger than the black keys.

He told the same class that Brophy's Blackboard website (bb.brophyprep.org), an online tool for homework assignments, class discussions, and other things was racist since it was called BLACKboard. He explained that in fact, the blackboard was really green, therefore a blatantly racist name.

He told a white student at St. Mary's to, "Get yo' God-Damn devil white hands off me!"

And when a kid at St. Mary's asked him to say something for a video camera he brought to school, Jarrett said, "Wherever white light falls, death and destruction follow."

Way to go Jarrett, fighting racism on EVERY front, even among pianos AND promoting racial harmony with his previous comments.

Oh yeah, one last thing. Thank you for misleading readers when you explained how the racist Brophy fans chanted "We don't want them," at the Brophy-St. Mary's basketball game. I was at the game and remember clearly the Brophy fans saying, "We don't want HIM." The 'him' is Jerryd Bayless. You see, in the 3rd quarter of that game, Jerryd hit five threes and the St. Mary's students chanted, "You can't buy him." To which we responded with "We don't want him."

P.S. Why don't you ask the minority faculty members about their racist experiences at Brophy, I'm sure they have loads to tell.

Toodles, Michael McGillicuddy '05.

woot!

to be honest, i was more concerned with the lack of the writer's literary ability. sure i was upset at the slander, but to think that someone with a job in journalism could possibly write that bad. he should know that writing Colloquially is not a good literary tool. i think Ms Kauffman would give him an F, and ms. K. is the nicest lady in the world. i really wanted to slap the guy in the face...doucheMan of the month.
